On April 5th, 2018 it will be 1 year since the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy. It is fair to say that it has not been a perfect year. Nationally the number of new apprentices has fallen and there remains significant confusion surrounding the Levy and its effect. Non-levy payers have seen a reduction in the funds available to them, end point assessment organisations are still determining what their assessment programmes look like and possibly most challenging, the stipulation to undertake 20% off the job has proven a significant challenge to employers.
Notwithstanding the challenges presented by the Levy, it offers significant opportunities especially for larger, Levy paying employers. At Always Consult we have been trying to embrace the changes and help employers to make use of their Levy to provide meaningful and useful training to their employees and to enhance their skills and productivity. We have set up a new division of the company – Always Apprentices – to help facilitate this.
One example of this is, that over the past few months we have been working in partnership with South Tees NHS Trust to deliver a brand-new Level 3 Leadership and Management course to foundation year 1 doctors. We are seeking to fill the gap between clinical training and the practicality of being a junior doctor, facing significant leadership challenges on a daily basis. We have also just started a Level 5 Leadership and Management course with Ward Managers. These highly qualified nurses have made the transition into management and we are delivering training in excellent leadership and management skills to complement their already excellent clinical skills.
So often, in all industries, technically proficient people are promoted into management positions without training to support the transition. The Apprenticeship Levy can be used to fill this gap, providing high quality, on the job and tailored training to enhance capabilities and allow staff to fulfil their true potential. If you would like to discuss how Always Apprentices can help deliver this training, adapted to your company, then please contact us on email@example.com.
